How can I prepare my property for storm season?
What a beautiful time of the year! Warmer weather and storms are on the way! This is a great time to look at all those maintenance jobs that need doing and to take the opportunity to do some Spring cleaning.
One of the important tasks for homeowners is to check gutters for leaves and debris, as soon we will be receiving some much needed rain and perhaps a few Spring storms. Check the roof for any damaged tiles, flashing or guttering and organise for a qualified maintenance person to fix any problems to prevent water damage to your home.
Check your windows and doors, especially if you have wooden fixtures. It is a good time to repair peeling paint etc and if necessary, repaint or stain outside windows and doors to protect them against the elements. A new coat of paint for your front door will give your house a new bright look and will refresh the exterior. Internal doors can also do with some love this time of year by giving them a good clean and checking hinges etc for any problems.
Another area of your home which could benefit by a quick check is the plumbing. Be on the lookout for any leaking taps, both internally and externally. It will save you from costly repairs in the future and also save precious water.
Prepare the garden by giving it some love and trim any large branches which could prove problematic during a storm. Early Spring is the best time to refresh the garden beds with quality soil and mulch to enable plants to get the nutrients essential for growth. Spring is a wonderful time to plant flowers, vegetables, and shrubs. Pests and their larvae might have been hiding in your garden during winter so if you want to minimise damage from pests, now is a good time to act. There are some excellent organic sprays which help to control the pests but are not harmful to our beautiful bees, birds, and butterflies etc. Whilst in the garden, it is an opportune time to check outdoor furniture for any maintenance issues and also for spiders etc which might have been hiding underneath tables or under chairs.
Fencing is another area which endures wet and chilly temperatures over Winter, so spring is a good time to revive and protect your fencing with a new coat of paint or stain.
Now that the exterior of your home is looking magnificent, it might be time to start some indoor Spring Cleaning. It will make a huge difference to your sense of well being and is enjoyable as the days get warmer and longer. Clean windows, do a deep clean of curtains, soft furnishing and perhaps organise for carpets to be professionally cleaned.
De-clutter and tidy up your home. Clean out kitchen cupboards, pantry etc and replace any old utensils, glasses etc with some new ones. It will be your reward for all your hard work and will bring you joy!
Wash all the bedding and replace your heavy doona with a lighter one. Perhaps pamper yourself with some new pillows.
After all your hard work, reward yourself with some beautiful flowers from the garden or florist and sit back and enjoy your home and Spring!
